Three lovely Pubs in the Cotswolds
On a warm summer’s day in June, there are few more relaxing places to be than in the garden of a country pub, perhaps beside flowing water, with a drink in one hand, and good company on the other.
The Swan at Swinbrook is on the banks of the River Windrush, close to Burford. It is a stunning Cotswolds inn boasting effortless décor, with a delightful personality, and a unique setting, which compliments its rich history.
Swinbrook was home to the aristocratic Mitford family. The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, known to the family as ‘Debo’ was especially attached to her Cotswold childhood, and this magical enclave.
The Swan boasts a superb restaurant with local, seasonal produce across the menu, and a cosy and attractive bar in the idyllic riverside location. There is a fun, and hugely relaxed Pizza Oven in the garden, which serves families easily and happily.
The Swan offers beautifully appointed accommodation in terms of various options in The Stables and Riverside Cottage.
For those who fancy watching a gentle game of village cricket, one can amble over the ancient bridge a few yards and sit by the pavilion. Burford, Oxford, Blenheim Palace and Astall Manor are all within easy reach together with Sherborne Deer Park, (National Trust)

The Bell, Sapperton is an independent family owned pub, situated in the heart of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Owned and run by Gloucestershire born and bred publican, Peter Austen, The Bell aims to offer relaxed hospitality, and consistently great pub food prepared with fresh, seasonal and regionally sourced ingredients.
For wine enthusiasts, there is a top notch ‘Wine Wall’ in the bar area, which is a self-serve wine shop of dozens of carefully sourced wines to take away, drink out, or drink in, for a small extra charge no matter what the bottle is- possibly the best value wines for discerning drinkers anywhere in Britain!
From March 2022, there are three lovely new bedroom suites, named after local woods. In 2021 they created the ‘Siccaridge’ room with a super king sized double ensuite and the ‘Dorvel & Hen’ two bedroomed suite for families and groups of friends. The new’ Sapperton Suite’ has recently been finished , which is the third luxury suite with a super king sized bedroom on the first floor, and open to the ceiling into the roof space.
The bedroom suites are designed with travellers and ‘staycationers’ in mind. All have a novel mini-kitchen with a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster, allowing guests to be self-contained for breakfasts and other meals, if it suits. This also means that the rooms are available when the main pub is closed from Sunday evenings to Wednesday mornings.

The Bathurst Arms at North Cerney has been a well patronised pub for decades. Nestled along the River Churn, in the picturesque Cotswold countryside, The Bathurst Arms is the perfect escape for both locals and visitors alike. This traditional pub offers old world rustic charm, fused with cosy corners and alfresco dining to enjoy with the whole family. One can easily drop in for a fleeting pint or stay for a while in one of the six en-suite rooms.
Whether sipping a refreshing cocktail under gypsy lights in the tepee, or indulging in a Sunday roast next to the fire, dinner after a day’s shooting or lying on the lawn on a summer evening beside the river, the Bathurst Arms caters for all at every time of year.
