Richard Greasby is no stranger to running, having completed various Ultra-marathons including a 100km run along the Cotswold Way.

However, running in the desert was an entirely new experience both in terms of the terrain and the temperatures.

The Saharan Challenge was run  in Morocco, some 100kms south east of Ouarzarate and the Atlas Mountains. It was a 2 Stage Ultra marathon run over two days back to back, with three nights camping in Tisguine.

The first 26 mile marathon on Friday 14th October started at Afra and finished at Tisguine. After uncomfortably (and unusually) hot nights under canvas, the competitors faced another 26 mile race across the hard, gritty, rocky and sandy terrain under a relentless sun, in temperatures reaching 35 degrees.

Richard completed the challenge, a little pink in the face but physically in one piece and with no blisters, having drunk copious amounts of liquid to ensure he did not fall victim to heat stroke. Others were not so lucky. Despite feeling very lightheaded a couple of times, he never seriously faltered and was thrilled to have had the experience.

Dates, camels, Bedu and palm trees, Richard now has a taste for the exotic and we look forward to learning where he will run next year.

Perhaps the Marathon des Sables…. although currently Richard has his sights set closer to home for a 3 stage Ultra-marathon, running three marathons over three days, along Dorset’s Jurassic coast in March.

He has the stamina for any test!
